Barbara Polinsky
Owner/Design Director
Barbara Michelle Jacobs Fine Jewelry

Barbara Polinsky never set out to be a jewelry designer, “it just kind of happened”.  As a young girl she enjoyed creating three-dimensional art from found objects and what ever was within reach.  “My mind and hands were always in motion and I was happiest when I was creating.”  She made everything from mud pies to large sculptures and garish outfits. In school Polinsky earned high praises for her dioramas and visual presentations – even if the book wasn’t quite completed.  Today, her art and designs draw on her conceptional creativity and her unique combination of skills that she has developed to compensate for her learning style.

Beauty in Imperfection, one of BMJNYC’s groupings is a family of styles that celebrates acceptance of differences.  It is sparked by the idea of imperfection in nature, people and in life.  What may be considered inconceivable flaws by other jewelers are this line’s trademark – jewelers file marks, visible seams and unpolished edges.  The forms are very simple but interesting blemishes give the jewelry depth.  Playing on the metaphor Beauty in Imperfection, she sets a small diamond in each piece, as a reminder that precious gifts in our lives aren’t always in plain sight and shouldn’t be taken for granted.  Just like us, this jewelry gets better with time and wear.

Barbara’s work is sometimes inspired by nature and sometimes sparked by a passing thought.  It can be described as whimsical, elegant and powerful.  “Whatever you call it; it’s a labor of love and shouldn’t be taken too seriously.”  Barbara Michelle Jacobs is named after her children Michelle and Jacob and is based in NYC where everything is made.
